The most in-demand AI skills in 2026
I reviewed the latest labour-market research from LinkedIn, the World Economic Forum, PwC, Coursera, Lightcast, the Stanford AI Index and UK sources. Here's what employers are asking for — and how Timson AI Academy maps to it.
The headline numbers
Average wage premium for jobs requiring AI skills, up from 57% the year before.
PwC Global AI Jobs Barometer 2026Growth in agentic AI skills in US job postings in a year — nearly 90,000 postings.
Stanford AI Index 2026, via LightcastYear-on-year rise in the share of US job postings asking for AI skills (now 2.5% of all postings).
Stanford AI Index 2026, via Lightcastof UK employers say AI is the hardest skill to find — the first time AI has topped the list. Mostly AI literacy and confidence, not technical skills.
ManpowerGroup UK Talent Shortage 2026of UK organisations surveyed report at least one AI skills gap; the biggest is understanding AI concepts and algorithms (60%).
DSIT AI Labour Market Survey 2025AI and big data is the fastest-growing skill to 2030, followed by networks and cybersecurity and technological literacy.
WEF Future of Jobs Report 2025Seven skill areas employers want
1. AI literacy for everyone
The biggest shortage isn't PhD-level research — it's ordinary employees who can use AI confidently and safely. UK employers now rank AI as the hardest skill to find, and they mean literacy and confidence in using AI in existing roles. Lightcast finds that almost all AI adoption is happening inside existing jobs rather than new AI job titles.
2. Prompt engineering and generative AI
Prompt engineering and large language models are among LinkedIn's fastest-growing skills for 2026. Coursera calls GenAI the most in-demand skill in its history, with enterprise GenAI enrolments up 234% and multimodal prompting and AI content creation rising quickly.
3. AI engineering and agentic AI
AI engineering tops LinkedIn's fastest-growing skills globally, alongside model tuning. The sharpest shift is towards agentic AI — systems that take actions, not just answer questions. Agentic skills grew by more than 280% in US postings, with a median advertised salary of $153,000 versus $141,000 for AI roles overall (Lightcast). In the UK, 57% of organisations plan to adopt agentic AI within three years.
4. Python, data and deployment
Python is the single most requested specialised skill in AI job postings. The fastest long-term growth is in deployment skills — cloud platforms such as AWS, scalability and workflow management. On the data side, data quality (+108%) and data cleansing (+103%) are among Coursera's fastest-growing skills.
5. Machine learning and NLP
Jobs requiring specialist AI skills such as machine learning grew 69%, compared with 9% across the whole job market (PwC). AI and machine learning specialists are among the WEF's fastest-growing jobs, and use of natural language processing in UK organisations has risen 34% in three years.
6. Governance, risk, compliance and security
Governance, risk management and compliance is one of LinkedIn's Skills on the Rise for 2026, and networks and cybersecurity is the WEF's second fastest-growing skill. With the EU AI Act's obligations phasing in, people who understand both AI and regulation are scarce.
7. Human skills that AI makes more valuable
Every report makes the same point: as AI does more, human judgement matters more. Critical-thinking enrolments grew 185% among Coursera's GenAI learners, as people shift to validating AI output. PwC highlights judgement, creativity, leadership and adaptability, and LinkedIn's 2026 list is full of leadership and communication skills.
